How Does The Book Daughter Of Venice Relate To Life Today?

What you probably know if you look back in time and compare it with today’s life you will notice that life isn’t like old times anymore. If you were to look between the Renaissances time and today you will see that there are a lot of things that are different. Like now a days we have vehicles, our own shops/ business, electronics and machines e.t.c. A big difference today and then is also how women were treated and their rights. Our world has made some big and small changes, which has made the whole world become a better place.

Life today for all women is having more freedom and being able to take care of your self and do what you like to do. Women can also work, get education and move around freely and have more or less the same rights as men have. Since the book was taking place during the Renaissance noble women were not allowed to have their own business. They were the people who had to look after home, help their husband with his business. Their lives were very simple, because they only had to rely on the men. Rich girls in the other hand were forbidden to go outside the house alone, so they could not play like poor kids and boys. They could not even go crabbing or meet other kids. “ I don’t know the name of that canal. I’ve never been down it. And there it is, opening to my eyes, then disappearing behind the buildings.” (Pg. 34) However the poor people were allowed to do these things; like choose who to marry, go outside, but they had disadvantages too, for example they had to work super hard because the whole city relied on the work they did. Another thing that was a rule was that normally one noble girl was allowed to marry, when one of their brothers were going to marry and get kids one of the sisters had to take care of his kids. The rest of the girls had to go to convent. . It was quite strict to follow this rules it was almost like freedom wasn’t an option for noble girls. “Girls go into the convents voluntarily, for the good of the family. Voluntarily? I stare. Who would volunteer for such a life? The convent has it’s advantages. What advantages? I demand. Women are protected there. Protected? Mother, they’re trapped. They have no freedom.” (Pg. 56)

There are so many different countries and cultures. Today most people respect each individual human for who they are and what their culture is, and the good thing with people today is that no matter what skin color, culture or believes a person has, most people get treated equally. People take note of that you have other rules in your culture and that you are not like that specific person or like everyone else. You are you, and you have as much rights as everyone else even if you are from Burma, India, Iran, Holland and America e.t.c. At the Renaissance time it wasn’t like that people didn’t really respect your culture or clothes you wore or even how you looked and spoke as much as today. In Venice the Catholics started to take control over other people in Venice like the Jews. They started to tell them where they could live and what to do. “Don’t you know about the decree back in 1516? All the Jews of Venice were ordered to move to the Ghetto. So the buildings have to be built tall enough, with enough floors, to hold us all. How sad that they had to leave their ancestral homes.” (Pg. 89)

Today the world has become a better place to live on. People are more equal. Men and women have more of the same rights now than before. More people have access to work and education, which has made us learn so many more new things and develop ideas. The world has also become more tolerant and different religions and culture can live side by side. However we still have to continue to work on these issues. There are still inequalities between men and women and there re still conflicts between religions that need to be solved.

Development Of Stanley

In the story Holes by Louis Sachar the main character is Stanley Yelnats. He goes to a camp called Green Lake because he has been convicted for a crime, which he was actually innocent for. At Camp Green Lake he meets other kids, councellors and the warden of the camp. After a while Stanley makes new friends. He gets along well with the counsellors and kids. At camp they have to work hard and dig holes all day long to build character. As the warden gets stricter to the kids, they also find out that they are actually digging holes because they are looking for a secret hidden treasure. In the beginning of the story Stanley is a non-confident boy, who doesn’t care about people teasing him. Throughout the story changes occur in Stanley. He makes friends and becomes braver.

In the beginning of the novel Stanley is a very lonely boy, who gets teased at school. He doesn’t trust himself nor have any friends. He doesn’t seem to care about himself, nor that others are teasing him. “He was overweight and kids at school often teased him about his size” pg. (7) Stanley never stood up for himself and said that he didn’t like to be teased. He wasn’t brave enough to say ‘stop this is enough, I don’t want this anymore’. “He was glad they called him Caveman. It meant they accepted him as a member of the group. He would have been glad if they’d called him Barf Bag” pg. (53, 54) Stanley didn’t care what name he got. They only thing that mattered to him was to get in or be in the group like every one else.

Stanley starts to change now when he has friends, because he feels like somebody cares about him, he is not feeling invisible any more. At that time he starts getting brave because he has trust in himself and he knows that people like him. It’s almost like he gets power from that. Stanley had Mr. Sir’s sack of sunflower seeds in his hole even though he wasn´t the one to steal it. The sack was there because he wanted to protect the others so he took the blame of stealing the sack. “So tell me Caveman said Mr. Sir. How did my sack of sunflower seeds get in your hole? I stole it from your truck said Stanley” pg. (86) Stanley is becoming brave because he has friends and he is one of them now. Therefore he feels like he can stand up and take the blame on himself, now when he feels comfortable.

He is getting ready to drive the truck, so he can find his friend Zero. However he is not so sure if he should steal it or not? “It’s too late he said to himself. Zero couldn’t have survived. But what if it wasn’t too late? He took another deep breath. Think about this, he told himself, but there wasn’t time to think. He flung open the door to the truck an climbed quickly inside” pg. (147) Stanley carried the braveness with him while trying to rescue Zero, even though he was scared and worried about getting caught as he fled from camp.

At the end Stanley has friends and helps others out. Now he is confident and proud of his achievements. Stanley is leaving camp with his lawyer. Stanley doesn’t want to leave camp without Zero coming with him. Stanley knows that Zero isn’t going to survive. “They will kill him,” said Stanley pg. (219) Stanley is saying what he really wants. He can stand up for his own thoughts and speech without changing it even though others don´t think he is right. He would never leave his best friend Zero behind, even if he had to die for him.

The warden is lying about Stanley taking the suitcase from her cabin, and that it belongs to her and not Stanley. “That’s not true” Stanley said.” Stanley is self-confident because he is not going to let the warden lie. Stanley knows what he has done and not done. He isn’t letting the warden taking over or lie about something Stanley hasn’t done. He stands up for what he has done even though it might be the wrong thing he chooses to do.

In the beginning of the story, Stanley is a lonely and non-confident boy, as he comes to Camp Green Lake because he has done a crime. He makes friends and starts to get brave. The braveness comes from having his friends by his side all the time. As the story goes on he gets to know everyone and turns out to be self-confident and also helping the other campers with their problems. Now he is self-confident for the first time in his life.

Donata and her father's relationship

Donata is in her father and mothers bedchamber, talking to her father about being able to attend an education liker her brothers. Together with her sister she wants to learn and get better educated. In the begging Donata’s father didn’t respect or understand who his daughter was, however by the end of their conversation there relationship grew and her father started to respect and understand her needs for and education.

Her father doesn’t see Donata as her actual self, he just sees her as a female family members. “What are you talking about daughter?” (p.107) Father doesn’t call Donata by her first name, because he doesn’t see her as an individual or that she is her self. He doesn’t respect her so much neither care for the person she is. Donata and her father’s relationship are not that close or strong.

Father is unsure about what he should respond back to Donata. “Father slaps his chest and gives a deep cough, as thought to clear his lungs.” (p. 107) Father take a moment to think over what to respond to her question about letting her attend tutorial or not, by slapping his chest and clearing his lungs. Depending on what her father answers, he is thinking about if he lattes her take lessons in what way would it be good for her.

Father and Donata’s relationship has now grown and he finally respects and understands her needs. “But a mind that can hold so many numbers need more nourishment, or it will languish and die. Yes Donata you and your sister may listen in on tutorial.” Father has finally made up his mind and is ready to tell Donata that she is able to take and listen in on tutorial. Father can now see as well that Donata needs that education which is going to be good for her.

In the end of their discussion father and Donata has come to an end and she is able to attend education. By the time everything has ended and gotten resolved, father and Donata’s relationship has become better and they have become much closer to each other. Her father is now respecting, understanding her needs of an education and also being able to help her at anytime. Donata is now happy about her attending education, wish has made her dream come true.

The City Of Canals

Omg! This is amazing. It’s such a beautiful city with a lot of canals and gondolas travelling on the water, trying to get through the water surface of dirt and trash. Some Palazzos are built around and along the canal such as Canal Grande. The city is full of jobs and activities being done on land and water such as rowing boats, building and trading. There are men and women of all classes, plain people, citizens and nobles. Women are walking on the side walk to get through the city, some are dressed in skirts, high heels or sandals with the bottom made of wood and a tight corset around there waist, to make them look skinnier. If you look to the right you can see the church. When the women go to church they usually wear veils around their head to show respect. The big squared area on the right is called Piazza San Marco. Families and other people go there to shop, as there is markets put up in that place. The markets sell fresh green and tasty vegetables and food. Last but not least there is a bite of trading among the people as well.

My Reflection Of Rights And Obligations

During the Renaissance the laws were fairly strict, especially for the girls, but for boys a little less strict.

The whole thinking about boys having right to be educated but not girls, just doesn´t sound right to me.It doesn´t makes sense. Another thing would be: if you look out today at the streets you would see boys and girls playing with each other, having fun, but during the R

enaissance there was

nothing such as that. Girls were not allowed to go out and play nor wear the type of clothes they choose to wear, but boys were allowed to. Also, only one son from each family was allowed to marry, just so the wealth wouldn´t be divided in too many. It was the same rules for the girls that only one daughter could marry and the rest had to live in a convent. However one fair thing among the boys was that they shared equally in the inheritance of there parents.

I felt really upset and sad when reading about how different possibilities girls and boys had at that time. It is totally unacceptable for me that girls could not learn and get the education that they needed and wished for, this is just not how humans are supposed to live. I think that boys and girls should have the same rights to do what they like. All people have the same value. Luckily this has changed and today boys and girls are treated equally in many parts of the world.
